Teaching

I started my teaching career as an elementary and adult English teacher in China. In the U.S., I have also taught Chinese to K-8 students. In the higher education setting, I have developed and taught various courses for undergraduate and graduate levels in the U.S. These courses were delivered in in-person, online asynchronous, and hybrid formats.

What Students Say About My Teaching

Overall

The instructor was always well organized and well prepared. (Fall 2023, LLED5040)

She was very active in terms of responding to any discussion boards and emails, and she showed a great deal of concern for us as students and as people. Her level of understanding yet still remaining committed to our grasping of the material really solidified my confidence in the topics and my experience with the linguistics department. (Fall 2021, LLED5730E)

Creativity and Multimodality

I also appreciated how the instructor made a point to include a variety of different types of activities rather than only lectures. I could tell how intentional she was and how she really thought through what activities we might enjoy and how to make the class more fun while still making sure we covered content effectively. (Fall 2023, LLED5040)

The professor provided weekly lectures which were very beneficial, as well as the readings which would tie into lecture. (Spring 2023, LLED5730E)

Independent and Collective Learning

I liked the discussions which acted as a follow-up for the readings as it allowed me to reflect on what I had learned and review new concepts and check for potential misunderstandings. (Spring 2023, LLED5730E)

I appreciated the Flip Discussion posts as opposed to written discussion posts. This way, it felt more interactive and it was more engaging, especially for an all-online course. (Fall 2022, LLED5730E)

Feedback

Feedback and grades were always provided in a timely manner, which was especially nice so we would know how we were doing in the class. Expectations were very clear and I also appreciated how specific feedback was. Because of this, I really felt that I was able to improve based on feedback and learn from it. (Fall 2023, LLED5040)

She offered great feedback and was there to answer questions whenever needed. She was always quick to respond and help guide us in our research. (Fall 2022, LLED5730E)

Online Instruction

I think the instructor really optimized the virtual experience, especially as it was asynchronous. By far the most clear and effective standards in an online course I took at the undergraduate level. (Fall 2022, LLED5730E)

I appreciated the Flip Discussion posts as opposed to written discussion posts. This way, it felt more interactive and it was more engaging (especially for an all-online course). (Fall 2022, LLED5030E)

Everything was announced and updated in a timely and well-advertised manner, and I didn’t feel like anything caught me off guard or confused me in terms of what I was supposed to do. Assessments and assignments were reasonable with their expectations, and the eLC page felt as accommodating as a typical in-person class. (Spring 2021, LLED5730E)
